Toyen

The Czech painter and poet of the imaginary, Marie Čerminová (1902-1980), chose her pseudonym in reference to the French Revolution and the word citoyen, or citizen in French. Meeting the painter-poet Jindřich Štyrský at the age of 20 would set the course of her life.
In 1925, she, together with Štyrský, became the founders of Artificialism...
"Toyen's work, greatly influenced by Hermeticism, plays with the utterly unexpected appearance of symbolic beings or objects: doves materialise in a ring of shining sunlight, the threatening wolf leaping out of the ruins of the Château Lacoste. The element of vertigo in her paintings recalls what one may feel upon peering over the bushy cliff haunted by ravens along which Prague, city of her birth, is constructed, the low, mysterious houses of the Street of Alchemists."... (Patrick Waldberg – Les demeures d'Hypnos)
An unshakeable friendship grew between her and André Breton; he dedicated a copy of the Surrealist Manifesto to her, writing "To Toyen, my friend among all women."
