Remedios Varo

Remedios Varo was one of the most important Mexican painters of the 20th century, along with Leonora Carrington and Frida Kahlo. She grew up in Spain and then moved around at the whim of her father's professional trips. He was a water engineer.
She was very good at industrial drawing and was also one of the first women to get into the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, in 1924. She received a classical training, but was as interested in avant-garde artists as she was in other masters from the past – Bosch, Giotto, Fra, Angelico, Goya, El Greco…
Then came the Spanish Civil War. In 1937, she was forced to roam so she went to Paris, cradle of surrealism, then to Mexico in 1941. Surrounded by numerous suitors and by her cats, and very close to Leonora Carrington who became her friend and soul mate and with whom she shared every mood, she thrived on readings and dreams.
The anxious and curious artist was a "star seeker". She painted singular pictures combining alchemy, mysticism and modern science; dreamlike landscapes in constant transmutation, inhabited by vegetarian vampires, enchanted flying machines, plant-covered cathedrals… A deeply poetic work.
